Road Signs on the Permit Test: Shapes and Colors

Part of our California permit test guide

Short answer: You do not need to memorize every sign. Learn the system instead. A sign's shape and color tell you its job (stop, give way, forbid, warn or guide) before you read a single word.

This guide follows the California Driver's Handbook (Section 7) and the national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which sets sign shapes and colors in every state. The handbook says to obey all warning signs regardless of their shape or color. The California permit test guide has the rest of the exam.

Start with the shape

Shape is the fastest clue, and you can read it from far away or when a sign is covered in glare or dirt.

ShapeWhat it means
Eight sides (octagon)Stop. Only the STOP sign uses it
Downward-pointing triangleYield. Slow down and be ready to stop
DiamondWarning. A specific road condition or danger ahead
Five sides (pentagon)School zone. Drive slowly and stop for children in the crosswalk
Circle (with an X and RR)Railroad crossing ahead. Look, listen, slow down and be ready to stop
RectangleRules you must obey (regulatory), or information (guide)

Then read the color

  • Red is for stop, yield and things you must not do. STOP, YIELD, DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY signs are red and white. A red circle with a red line through it means the picture inside shows what you cannot do, for example a U-turn.
  • White rectangles state rules you must obey, such as one-way or no parking signs.
  • Yellow is for warnings. Yellow and black signs warn about road conditions ahead.
  • Green guide signs give directions and distances, such as exits. Blue signs point to motorist services like gas, food and hospitals. Brown signs point to parks and recreation areas.
  • Orange is for road work. Construction and temporary traffic control signs have an orange background.

The five groups, in practice

  1. Stop. Make a full stop at the limit line. With no line, stop before the crosswalk, and with no crosswalk, stop before the intersection. Check all directions before you go.
  2. Yield. Slow down and be ready to stop for any vehicle, bicyclist or pedestrian. You only stop if you need to.
  3. Regulatory. These are red and white or white signs that give a rule. Follow the instruction on the sign. A DO NOT ENTER sign means do not drive onto that road or ramp.
  4. Warning. Most are yellow diamonds. Examples in the handbook include Slippery When Wet, Merging Traffic, Lane Ends, Pedestrian Crossing, Stop Ahead and Yield Ahead. The "ahead" signs give you time to slow down before the real sign.
  5. Guide. These tell you where you are and where roads go. They rarely carry a rule, so exam questions about them are mostly about reading the information.

Wrong way and construction

If you enter a road against traffic, you may see DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY signs. When it is safe, back out or turn around. At night, red road reflectors in your headlights are a sign you are going the wrong way. Highway construction and maintenance signs are orange, most often diamonds. Slow down and watch for workers and equipment.

How to study signs

Group them by shape and color first. Then practice with real questions. Permi uses sign images and explains every answer, so you learn to recognize a sign on sight. Try 5 practice questions free.
