How to use this checklist

  1. Choose your state, then "Under 18" or "18 or older".
  2. Read each row. Rows marked "Confirm on the official page" are ones we could not confirm, so open the link.
  3. Tick a row when you have the document in hand. Your ticks are saved in this browser.
  4. Print the page the day before and check the official page once more.

Questions

What do I need to bring to the DMV for a learner's permit?

It depends on your state and your age. This checklist lists what California's DMV, Texas DPS and Florida's FLHSMV say, and marks any row we could not confirm so you can check it on the official page.

Is the list different if I am under 18?

Yes in some states. California asks minors for a driver education certificate and a parent or guardian signature on the application. Florida asks for a signed parental consent form and proof of the Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course. Use the age toggle to see each list.

Does the checklist save my progress?

It saves your checkmarks in your own browser, on this device only. Nothing is sent to us. If your browser blocks storage, the checklist still works but forgets your ticks when you leave.

Where is the official list?

Every row links to the California DMV, Texas DPS or FLHSMV page it comes from. Requirements change, so read the official page before you go.
